Today's cars bore you? Just wait

If you are tired of what you see in dealer showrooms, hang on, because all kinds of interesting new cars and trucks are coming soon.

Some exciting newcomers are on view this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show and plenty more will follow at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Appropriately enough, Volkswagen is using sunny Los Angeles for the world debut of its new Beetle cabriolet and Fiat is following suit with the 500 Abarth convertible autel maxidas ds708. Higher up the food chain, Jaguar has revealed its new F-Type two-seat sports car, also in drop-top and coupe form.

Ford is back in the people mover business with an extended version of its Transit Connect, and Subaru has unveiled a revised Forester crossover with more interior space. The Transit Connect Wagon hits showrooms later in 2013 with two four-cylinder engine choices, a 2.5-liter and a turbocharged 1.6-liter EcoBoost unit. Two wheelbase versions are available, for five- or seven-passenger models.

From Honda, the big news is that the Civic, launched only last year, is being refreshed with an improved cockpit after early criticism of the design. Honda's upscale division, Acura, rolled out its newly designed RLX flagship sedan with an optional 3.5-liter V-6 engine and all-wheel drive.

In the green arena, two tiny cars join the fray: battery-powered versions of the Chevrolet Spark and the Fiat 500. BMW also revealed another electric car in the form of the i3 concept.

German luxury automakers fleshed out their stables with additional models, including new diesel variants of the A6, A7, A8 and Q5 from Audi; a special AMG Black Series edition of Mercedes' gullwing SLS sports car; and from Porsche, the next-generation Cayman coupe, which is based on this year's Boxster chassis.

Not to be outdone, Jaguar revealed its own high-performance machine, the XFR-S, which is a special edition of the XF sedan. With 550 horsepower on tap, the XFR-S will be a rare beast; only 100 will be sold in the U.S.

Adding some pizazz to its flagship Town & Country minivan, Chrysler introduced the S edition with an upscale interior treatment.

For Dodge, the emphasis was on the Daytona, a limited 2500-unit edition of the Charger. Buyers get the 370-horsepower Hemi V-8, plus hood stripes, a spoiler and custom interior.

Other significant newcomers from Asian automakers include the latest RAV4 compact crossover from Toyota and a new Forte two-door coupe and five-door hatchback from Kia. Mazda presented its all-new Mazda6 mid-size sedan, updated 2014 CX-5 compact SUV and face-lifted 2013 CX-9 mid-size SUV for the first time in the U.S.

Flashing forward to early January 2013 and the Detroit auto show, consumers will have some homegrown headliners to feast on. Perhaps the most compelling will be the all-new Corvette digital inspection cameras, which makes its first official appearance on Jan. 13, although Chevrolet has been busy with teaser images and videos already. Truck buyers also will be keenly anticipating the unveiling of the next generation Chevrolet Silverado pick-up in Detroit.

Other key new players scheduled for the Motown show include BMW's new X4 crossover, a new seven-seat SUV concept from VW, Infiniti's latest-generation G37 sedan and in the luxury arena, Maserati's new Quattroporte sedan.
